Biography

Andrey Lyalin is an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemical System Engineering, School of Engineering at The University of Tokyo and a Visiting Researcher at National Institute for Materials Science. He received his Ph.D. in Physics and Mathematics from St. Petersburg State University in 1995 and has held research positions at Imperial College London, Goethe University Frankfurt, Kyoto University, and Hokkaido University.

His research focuses on theoretical and computational catalysis, sustainable hydrogen production, electrochemistry, and materials discovery using first-principles simulations and high-performance computing. He proposed the “activating the inert” concept, demonstrating how stable earth-abundant materials such as boron nitride can be transformed into efficient catalysts for energy conversion. Dr. Lyalin has authored more than 100 peer-reviewed publications and received the 2022 HPC Innovation Excellence Award from Hyperion Research for contributions to HPC-driven materials design for catalysis and energy applications.
