Talk title: Hydrogen Embrittlement in Energy Industry: Perspective on Mechanisms and Emerging Challenges in H2 and CO2 Transportation
Biography
Dr. Neeraj Thirumalai is currently the Manager of Hydrocarbon and Materials Science capability in ExxonMobil Technology and Engineering Company (EMTEC) located in Clinton, NJ. He leads a team of 15 researchers working on carbon capture technologies, materials technologies for low carbon hydrogen processes, pipeline technologies for safe transportation of hydrogen and CO2. He has been a research technology leader in EMTEC leading R&D in materials and integrity technologies at ExxonMobil for more than 24 years. His technical expertise covers materials, pipelines, offshore structures and coatings technologies catering to several business areas including upstream (sour service pipelines), midstream (vintage pipeline seam integrity), downstream (HTHA, friction and wear) and low carbon solutions (H2 and CO2 transportation).
He has won several awards including highest technical achievement award in ExxonMobil, Senior Technical Council Award twice in 2015 and 2019, Lubricants Technology Award and several Patent and Publications awards.
He has over 22 patents/patent applications and has published over 40 scientific articles in leading materials science journals and conferences. He has given invited presentations at several leading international conferences (Gordon Conference, International Hydrogen Conference, TMS etc.) and universities (MIT, Brown, NTU).
Dr. Thirumalai received his B.E. in Metallurgical Engineering from PSG College of Technology, Coimbatore, India and PhD in Materials Science and Engineering from The Ohio State University, USA.
